Fall season was satisfying overall for Marquette athletics, with three excellent teams that just kept getting better. 2006 proved a fruitful year for freshman recruits and also in the stunning leadership skills of the upperclassmen in their respective sports. The women’s soccer team played well this season, ending with a record of 11-7-3 overall. Under the leadership of Head Coach Markus Roeders, the ladies defeated Purdue to advance into the second round of the NCAA tournament. Marquette fought hard against No. 16 Florida, but lost the game after 110 minutes of scoreless play in a shootout. The final score was 4-3. The Marquette Golden Eagles will be losing eight outstanding seniors who will be missed next season; however, the team looks ahead to the talent of its underclassmen. Up-and-coming freshman forward Anna Sawicki shows promise repeatedly, as well as sophomore defender Katie Kelly and junior forward Allison Mallams. These are just three of the many gifted women on the team, as Marquette fans look forward to another stellar season of Golden Eagle women’s soccer next year.
As for the men’s soccer team, the season ended abruptly in a tough loss to Georgetown with a score of 1-0. Under the leadership of new Head Coach Louis Bennett, the men’s final season record stands at 1-16-4 overall. One major highlight from the season occurred early in November when the team was featured on the nationally aired Fox Soccer Channel, due to the quality of the Marquette coaching staff and the overall humanistic attitude of the team. Players to watch next season include freshmen Tim Jallow and Billy Von Rueden, who were included in the top 100 freshman list, sophomore Andy Gill and junior Mike Carlson. Although the season record was less than desirable, the men’s team worked hard and will hopefully continue to come together and produce a better outcome next season.
